Using FTP to Put Your Web Page on the Internet
This post will wrap up our recent series tips about using your GoBigWest personal server space. This last topic, posting a personal web page on the Internet, is the most advanced one of the series and because of that, we will not be as detailed in this post as we have been in previous ones. This post is merely to let you know what can be done with your personal server space so if you would like to make a personal web page available on the Internet, you know that GoBigWest has the capability to do that for you.
As was described in the previous entries on this subject, your GoBigWest folder is just like any other folder on your computer except that it is located on our server and you have to use FTP in order to place files there. When you put a web page in your GoBigWest folder, you are again transferring files from your computer to your GoBigWest folder except that this time you are placing a specific kind of file such as an HTML file that is used to display web pages. In the last letter we also described how you could access a document from a different computer by typing in the location of that document in the address bar of your browser program. The same principle applies to accessing a web page HTML file except that when you access an HTML file from a different computer, the browser program displays a web page instead of the file.
Of course, placing an HTML file in your GoBigWest folder is much easier that creating the file in the first place. Creating that file requires that you have an understanding of how web pages work and how they are written. Although we will not go in deatails on how to build a web page (entire books are written on the subject), and we realize that most users will never have the need or the desire to create a web page of their own, we still feel that acquiring a basic knowledge of the subject is beneficial to you as an Internet user. There are a multitude of free services on the Internet such as http://www.w3schools.com/html/ and informative books that you can buy that are designed to teach novices how to create web pages. Even if you do not go so far as to create a web page of your own, knowing about what goes into making a web page will help you to better see how the web pages that you browse are constructed and to appreciate the effort that goes into them.
